Le titre de ces journées scientifiques n'est pas une simple interrogation scientifique. C'est également une quête humaniste , une inquiétude culturelle de 1ère importance. L'objectif était la tentative de mise en place des éléments qui concourent à une meilleure connaissance de l'Autre, en faire l'éloge, entendre la voix de l'altérité, c'est affirmer haut et fort que le défi de la connaissance scientifique est d'abord et avant tout un outil au service des hommes pour la construction d'un monde meilleur, défait des craintes inutiles et des crispations dangereuses. Reconnaître la différence d'autrui, c'est dans le même temps militer pour sa propre reconnaissance, s'affirmer sans détruire, être présent aux multiples altérités qui font la richesse de notre monde et des sociétés qui le composent" explique, en introduction à cet ouvrage, Mohamed Youssef Beydoun, Ministre de la culture et de l'enseignement supérieur. Ces Journées sont aussi l'occasion d'une réflexion sur le débat qui anime les linguistes : entre les partisans d'un fond commun qui rendrait possible toute traduction qu'il s'agisse d'une langue originaire ou qu'il s'agisse d'une langue universelle logiquement reconstruite et les partisans de la radicale hétérogénéité des langues qui pensent parfois que toute traduction est impossible ou qui s'efforcent de trouver les chemins nouveaux du dialogue malgré tout.
