Abstract
Esta obra resulta una sinopsis de la informacion necesaria de nuestros sistemas acuaticos que permite contribuir al conocimiento del papel del carbono, actual y en eras geologicas pasadas, en el cambio climatico del planeta. Y muestra la necesidad urgente de apoyar los estudios encaminados a resolver la carencia nacional en este campo de las ciencias ambientales. El conocimiento aqui compilado apoyara inicialmente los requerimientos cientificos del Programa Mexicano del Carbono, el cual tiene un fuerte componente acuatico. Este programa es coordinado por el Instituto Nacional de Ecologia de la SEMARNAT, y mantiene una estrecha colaboracion con el Programa del Carbono de Norteamerica, en el que participan los Estados Unidos de America, Canada y Mexico.
