Abstract
La comtesse bretonne Marie de Kerstrat et son fils le vicomte Henry d’Hauterives, déjà connus pour leur rôle de pionniers de l’exploitation du cinéma au Québec, ont également eu une place importante mais encore méconnue dans l’émergence du cinéma aux États-Unis. De 1899 jusqu’à 1910 ils ont été parmi les exploitants les plus renommés, projetant les films français coloriés de Méliès et Pathé dans les grands théâtres et les Parcs d’attraction en utilisant un matériel perfectionné et une publicité audacieuse. Poussée graduellement vers la marge par l’intégration verticale des firmes américaines, leur entreprise artisanale constitue un exemple intéressant pour mieux comprendre la standardisation de l’exploitation et la réduction de la distribution française aux États-Unis.
