Afin de mettre en évidence la conceptualisation qu’une partie des théoriciennes écoféministes proposent en matière de travail en régime capitaliste, qu’il soit salarié, agricole et domestique, on a qualifié de féminisme de la subsistance tout un groupe de théoriciennes comme Françoise d’Eaubonne, Maria Mies, Silvia Federici, Vandana Shiva et Starhawk, qui ont en commun de mettre en lien féminisme, activisme et mise en pratique d’alternatives écologiques qui relèvent d’une forme d’écoféminisme vernaculaire. Cette approche matérialiste, mais aussi spirituelle de l’écoféminisme s’appuie sur des recherches anthropologiques et historiques qui distinguent le travail vivrier d’autoproduction par les deux sexes et le travail domestique féminin de préparation de produits industrialisés en termes économique et politique. Les destructions environnementales de l’industrialisation de la sphère des besoins sont corrélées à la mise à mort des dernières sociétés paysannes du sud et la division internationale inéquitable du labeur de production des ressources vitales dont les femmes sont les premières victimes.
