Abstract
Le territoire qui constitue aujourd’hui l’État brésilien du Minas Gerais ne fut occupé par les colonisateurs – tant portugais que métis, dans leur majorité venus de São Paulo – que dans les dernières décennies du XVIIe siècle. Jusqu’à cette époque, cette région avait été habitée par des Amérindiens et était restée isolées des zones côtières qui avaient été le théâtre, depuis le début du XVIe siècle, de l’invasion progressive des terres et de leur incorporation dans le dominium du Portugal. Cent ans plus tard, le Minas était devenu la plus importante contrée de l’empire portugais. Ce territoire où l’on avait découvert de l’or en quantité fabuleuse généra des représentations successives qui se nouèrent les unes aux autres. Dans les récits des contemporains, ici examinés, il est tantôt vu comme mythique, tragique, pratique ou affectif. Dans les mêmes textes s’exprime aussi la constante préoccupation de ces hommes pour la destruction du milieu naturel, dévasté par l’envahissement progressif des terres comme par les intempéries climatiques propres à cette région.
