Abstract
L’inégalité du développement de la géographie des langues provient, en partie, de l’inégalité de la reconnaissance des minorités, à l’exemple de la situation française. L’étude du rapport langue-espace prend, selon les pays, des dénominations diverses : géographie des langues, géolinguistique, écologie des langues. L’auteur insiste sur l’apport de William K. Mackey, linguiste canadien anglophone de naissance et « francisé » au Québec, dans la définition des concepts de géolinguistique (puissance, attraction, pression). Il évoque ensuite la dynamique des langues (identification, extension, transfert linguistique). Sont enfin précisées les méthodes de la géographie des langues, avec pour axes principaux la saisie des données, leur répartition dans l’espace, la relation avec le rôle des différents facteurs environnementaux : individus, communautés, États.
