Méconnue en France, longtemps oubliée en Allemagne, l'Histoire du mouvement social en France de 1789 à nos jours publiée par Lorenz von Stein en 1850 apparaît comme un moment important de l'histoire des interprétations de la Révolution française. L'influence de Hegel et le débat avec les doctrines socialistes et communistes amènent l'auteur à une lecture sociale de la Révolution et de ses mouvements juridiques et constitutionnels, en rupture avec l'historiographie alors dominante, comme avec les thèses de l'Ecole historique. Rappelant les grands traits de la théorie de l'État et de la société élaborée par Stein, l'article s'efforce d'en suivre l'application à la lecture des événements constitutionnels révolutionnaires de 1 789 à la Terreur.
