Abstract
Cet article interroge la représentation de la forêt dans Éducation européenne (1945) de Romain Gary : lieu de vie des personnages du roman, elle en est de facto le cadre romanesque. Mais n’est-t-elle pour autant qu’une localisation géographique ou un effet de réel ? En tant qu’espace sauvage et préservé de la guerre qui fait rage dans le reste du roman, mais aussi en tant qu’espace où émerge et se concentre la critique de la barbarie humaine, la forêt devient alors une hétérotopie telle que la théorise Michel Foucault et dont nous proposons ici une lecture écopoétique. Gary fait de la forêt un espace qui fait sens et qui, paradoxalement, symbolise la survivance de l’humanisme dans les temps où il est le plus menacé.
