Nombre d’enseignants québécois hésitent à appliquer des sanctions aux élèves. D’une part, ils sont formés selon des approches pédagogiques qui misent sur la prévention et sur la bonne volonté des élèves, et d’autre part ils craignent d’abuser de leur pouvoir. Certains d’entre eux ont connu le châtiment corporel qui visait l’obéissance des élèves. L’auteur soutient que les enseignants doivent apprendre à faire valoir l’autorité des règles et des sanctions qui leur sont inhérentes. La sanction scolaire n’est certes pas la panacée à tous les problèmes disciplinaires, mais elle fait partie d’une logique d’intervention pour contrer les élèves indisciplinés et parfois agressifs à leur égard et à l’égard des autres élèves.
