Abstract
Les images touristiques, commerciales et publicitaires nous ont habitués-e-s à associer à l’Italie la figure de la botte. Cette image, très contemporaine, plonge en réalité ses racines dans une imagerie bien plus ancienne, quoique tout aussi populaire en son temps : une imagerie élaborée à la Renaissance et dans laquelle l’Italie n’était pas représentée comme une botte, mais comme une jambe humaine. Cette image trouve sa formulation originelle et exemplaire dans un ouvrage de géographie de Leandro Alberti datant de 1551, la Descrittione di tutta Italia, qui eut un succès considérable à la Renaissance. Derrière la fonction iconique de popularisation propre à toute imagerie, cette image cache un sens plus profond, celui de rendre perceptible un territoire dans sa globalité en lui conférant une forme d’unité géographique. Ce qui se joue dans cette image, c’est le problème de l’unité de l’Italie : une unité non pas politique, mais géographique et paysagère. Pour le dire plus précisément, c’est le problème de l’appréhension du territoire italien comme ensemble unifié de paysages régionaux variés.
