Abstract
Malgré les apparences, les événements survenus pendant la Révolution française en métropole ne peuvent pas être rangés dans la catégorie de la « violence totale », même en ce qui concerne les guerres de l’Ouest. Des limites aux dévastations sont clairement repérables. Ce sont d’autres situations, notamment dans l’île de Saint-Domingue, qui pourraient recevoir cette qualification avec plus de justesse, même s’il s’agit là de phénomènes perpétuant des habitudes anciennes. C’est alors dans la perspective ouverte par Carl Schmitt, autour de l’État total, que les mutations de la conduite de la guerre entraînées par la novation révolutionnaire peuvent être comprises comme les prémices des temps nouveaux, mobilisant les populations dans leur totalité et réquisitionnant toutes les énergies. Dans ce cadre limité, la période révolutionnaire participe alors à l’instauration de pratiques que l’Empire et les guerres coloniales consacreront.
