À l’exception de l’exploitation de diamants par 150 mètres de profondeur, aucune opération de longue durée n’a encore été menée à bien en matière de collecte à des fins commerciales de minéraux solides à des profondeurs supérieures à - 200 mètres. La compagnie canadienne Nautilus Minerals a obtenu sa première concession minière en janvier 2011 pour des gisements de sulfures polymétalliques, en Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée. Elle travaille à la mise au point d’un système d’exploitation de ces gisements, dont les premiers essais devraient avoir lieu en 2019. La France dispose par ailleurs d’un ensemble cohérent d’atouts, de ressources, de compétences et d’expertises uniques au monde en matière de fonds sous-marins et d’exploitation minière. Ces acteurs sont regroupés au sein d’un groupe de travail dédié du Cluster Maritime Français (CMF). L’État a mis en place un concours mondial de l’innovation consacré à la valorisation des richesses marines, qui a permis de financer les projets les plus innovants et de fédérer plusieurs industriels français autour des deux consortiums (MELODI et FONASURF) dédiés aux développements d’outils d’exploration et d’exploitation.
