Abstract
Dans les ouvrages de Rancière, il est du devoir du philosophe politique de contester le partage établi des positions de chacun, ce qu’il nomme le travail de « la police ». La police s’assure que les positions et les classes restent séparées, tandis que la politique s’emploie au contraire à mettre à bas cette répartition. Rancière articule de la sorte démocratie et esthétique. Ce qu’il nomme la littérature « moderniste » donne une forme esthétique au principe « démocratique » qui constitue le cœur du nouveau « régime » de l’art. Un des exemples privilégiés de Rancière est Madame Bovary, le roman de Flaubert. Mon essai avance pourtant que l’œuvre de Rancière a pour point aveugle l’un des enjeux majeurs de notre modernité, à savoir « la question de la femme ». Il suggère que le genre le plus « démocratique », qui s’empara le mieux de cette question, fut le roman de détection. Je me réfère pour ma part à Jane Eyre, de Charlotte Brontë, et Rebecca de Daphne du Maurier.
