Abstract
La mort de dix soldats français tués au combat en Afghanistan en 2008 a rappelé de façon brutale que, aujourd’hui comme hier, des hommes sacrifiaient leur vie pour accomplir leur mission. La nation, dans sa grande majorité, refuse désormais d’admettre cette éventualité qui n’est plus enseignée. Depuis bientôt un siècle, la « privatisation de la mort » du soldat a progressivement fait disparaître la notion de sacrifice pour la patrie, devenue presque insupportable, au moment même où la société occidentale est menacée dans son existence par le fanatisme le plus déterminé.
