Abstract
( Anesth Analg . 2019;129(1):294–300) Low-income and middle-income countries have historically struggled to provide access to anesthesia and surgical services for their patient populations, but this is also a difficulty for the rural areas of higher-income countries such as Australia, Canada, and the United States. The World Health Organization considers anesthesia and surgical services to be part of patients’ rights to health, but it is more difficult for surgical patients to access needed care in rural areas due to the limited availability of medical professionals in those areas. A study of the proposed solutions to these issues can be beneficial not only for Australia, Canada, and the United States, but can also help provide a framework for other countries to improve their population’s access to needed medical care.
