In this paper, a performance comparison is conducted through experimental setup between induction machine based water pump (IM-based pump) and permanent magnet synchronous machine based water pump (PMSM-based pump). Both pumps, under test, are chosen to deliver that same water flow quantity Q at similar pressure head H allowing the comparison to be focused only on the performance of the electrical machines; with the same mechanical loading. A laboratory test rig is constructed and the electrical data are collected by data logging system, while each pump run for the same period of time. The results have been discussed to highlight the merits of the performance of the PMSM-based pumps over IM-based ones.
