Abstract
Il s’agit d’examiner, à travers les quatre livres de la Guerre des Goths , comment Procope utilise cette famille de mots. En ce VI e siècle où les « Barbares », au sens ethnique du terme, sont nombreux, à la fois chez les ennemis de Rome mais aussi enrôlés dans l’armée même des Romains, dans un ouvrage écrit en grec par un serviteur de la Rome de Byzance, dans un contexte où l’Empereur Justinien veut reconquérir une Italie gérée depuis plusieurs décennies par des Goths, on peut se demander qui sont les Barbares de Procope et à qui ils s’opposent. Se retrouver en Italie comme en pays étranger n’est pas le moindre problème des hommes de Bélisaire, et leur « barbarie » ne fait parfois que souligner la « romanité » de certains Goths, dont le témoin Procope semble avoir une conscience aiguë.
