Abstract
Depuis plusieurs décennies, en Europe, l’archéologie préventive met au jour un bien plus grand nombre de vestiges que l’archéologie programmée. La masse d’informations issue de ces recherches préventives est telle que son traitement constitue une tâche colossale, mais aussi incontournable si on ne veut pas que les fouilles préventives deviennent synonymes de destruction des vestiges – ce qu’elles sont précisément censées empêcher. L’effort que doit fournir notre société (en termes de temps et de moyens financiers, notamment) peut paraître lourd, voire insurmontable à certains ; pourtant, cet effort est impératif et primordial, car les fouilles préventives sont porteuses d’enjeux majeurs, aussi bien scientifiques que sociétaux. Cet article vise à détailler ces enjeux et à les analyser au regard des effets délétères de la logique néolibérale sur l’archéologie préventive et des difficultés écologiques et sociétales actuelles.
