Situé dans le prolongement du centre-ville de Montréal, le quartier Centre-sud, qui fut désigné sous différentes appellations au cours des deux derniers siècles, est un des plus vieux de Montréal. Formant un important pôle urbain et industriel en pleine prospérité durant le XIXe siècle et le début du XXe siècle, le quartier Centre-sud connut dès les années d’après-guerre une conjoncture difficile. Depuis, la municipalité a appliqué dans ce quartier les différentes recommandations caractéristiques des urbanismes de la deuxième moitié du XXe jusqu’à nos jours. En ce sens, le quartier Centre-sud constitue en quelque sorte un laboratoire expérimental des différents modes de construction et des choix d’évolution urbaine, depuis la « rénovation urbaine » des années 1950 à 1970, à la « revitalisation urbaine » dans les années 1980-1990, jusqu’aux actuels « renouvellement urbain » et « urbanisme durable ». S’il est intéressant de constater qu’en parcourant le paysage construit du Centre-sud depuis 1950 on peut voir apparaître le condensé bien lisible de l’histoire de l’urbanisme contemporain, il ne faut pas oublier que ces différentes opérations ont profondément marqué la population de ce quartier, caractérisée par une forte proportion de ménages monoparentaux, une sous-scolarisation importante, un taux de chômage parmi les plus élevés de Montréal, et de nombreux problèmes sociaux (toxicomanie, itinérance, prostitution de rue, santé mentale, criminalité).
