Abstract
À l’été 2018, le spectacle de Lepage avec la troupe du Théâtre du Soleil, Kanata – qui évoque le sort des Autochtones au Canada – est accusé d’appropriation culturelle et annulé au Québec même s’il reste programmé en France : un Blanc n’a-t-il pas le droit de raconter l’histoire des opprimés des Premières Nations ? Le présent article examine les enjeux que soulève cette controverse pour la représentation théâtrale. Même si les revendications des Autochtones à faire reconnaître leur histoire et à obtenir des espaces d’expression sont légitimes, l’accusation d’appropriation culturelle, en mettant sur le même plan identité et culture, interdit toute représentation de l’autre. Comment rendre encore possibles les arts mimétiques si l’on exige identité et appartenance entre le représenté et le représentant ? Plus que la légitimité du créateur à parler de l’autre, il faut interroger le dispositif artistique qui, s’il est maladroit, peut effectivement relayer une forme de racisme, même involontaire. Il n’en est rien pour Kanata.
