Abstract
In the face of the contradictory research findings relating to counselling networks and friendship networks in organizations, which sometimes correlate and sometimes do not, we formulate the hypothesis that counselling networks are consulted in situations of uncertainty and friendship networks in situations of ambiguity. We asked employees from one organization to identify the persons they would consult to handle certain situations and to indicate the level of expertise and of friendship for each of these persons. The findings show that the use of networks is influenced by the type of situation; in particular, counselling networks are consulted in situations of uncertainty. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]
