Abstract
The ability to develop their social capital has been presented in recent times as one of the key factors of firms' success. Yet a review of the literature, focusing on social capital and social networks, shows that a tension may exist between the development of individual social capital and the benefits that an organization may derive from it. Studying the development of the local social capital of operational units in three large international firms, this research analyzes the networking strategies by which these firms succeed in overcoming this tension and establishing their influence on their local environment. These strategies rely on numerous boundary spanners as well as on the combination of strong and weaker ties. The autonomy accorded actors in the field is counterbalanced by the appeal to culture as a mechanism of integration. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]
