Abstract
The world’s population grew to nearly 9 billion in the first half of last century. As a result, global demand for food, feed and fiber nearly doubled while crops were used increasingly for bioenergy and other non-food purposes. Demand for agricultural products will thus put more pressure on already scarce agricultural resources. Some 95% of population growth occurs in developing regions where food deficits are already severe and alternate employment opportunity and economic growth are limited. This study describes livestock production system trends and the importance of those trends to developing countries. It also explains livestock and poultry production systems, identifies challenges facing those systems, and describes the status of feed sources in Iran.
