Après s’être effondré dans les années 1990, le cinéma algérien refait surface sur la scène internationale depuis la fin de la guerre civile (1992-2003). La reprise de la production à partir de 2005 a vu émerger deux cinémas algériens antagonistes en concurrence pour l’écriture de l’histoire nationale. D’un côté, un cinéma de propagande nationaliste, généreusement financé par l’État, réinvestit le passé glorieux de la guerre d’indépendance (1954-1962), afin de mieux occulter les horreurs de la « décennie noire ». De l’autre, un cinéma d’auteur, financé par l’étranger et ancré dans le temps présent, prend en charge la mémoire douloureuse de la guerre civile et donne à voir la déchirure d’une société algérienne contemporaine en état de sidération.
