The author of this book, Ken Barrie, is a senior lecturer in alcohol and drug studies at the University of the West of Scotland. The series editors are Joyce Cavaye of the Faculty of Health and Social Care of the Open University in Scotland, Edinburgh and Alison Petch of The Institute for Research and Innovation in Social Services, Glasgow. So this book has a backdrop of Scotland. The book is organized into seven chapters along with a series of editors' introduction and author's introduction. Both the introductions have been written well and present compelling reasons to read this book. The first chapter of this book is about drinking in the United Kingdom. The chapter points that that the European region is the heaviest drinking region in the world with about 20% of the population over 15 years indulging in heavy episodic drinking at least once a week (World Health Organization, 2010). This data signifies how large the problem of alcohol is in this region. The chapter presents the recommended limits for drinking in UK, portrays the data of expenditure and sales, describes the data from national surveys, and discusses the national and regional differences in alcohol consumption. The author also discusses the drinking in children and young people and includes a case study in this regard. The case study is good but it would have been better if some questions for reflection and discussion were included. The chapter concludes with a set of conclusions. The second chapter discusses the health and social consequences of alcohol. The various health consequences of alcohol have been presented well in this chapter. The specific effects on health services in Scotland in primary care, emergency hospital admissions, alcohol-related hospital discharges, and alcohol-related deaths are highlighted. The consequences of alcohol on driving and association with criminal activities are also discussed. Finally, the impact on family is discussed. The chapter ends with a set of conclusions. The third chapter is about the pricing of alcohol. This is an area where producers of alcohol, distributors of alcohol, governmental entities, and the general public play a role.
