The role of speech perception realized on the basis of the perceptron for individual phonemic categories in speech sounds was investigated. The synthetic words were perceived differently from the natural words, even when both consisted of tokens from the same categories. A synthetic word and a natural word might also become acoustically similar, with the suppression of certain categories due to simulated hearing loss. The results show that the speech perception was based on perception for co-articulated categories rather than single phonemic categories.
