Abstract
Oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy is a late-onset autosomal dominant muscular dystrophy. It usually presents in the fifth decade with eyelid ptosis which is followed within a few years by dysphagia. Mild-to-moderate lower limb–girdle weakness is also often present. The diagnosis is confirmed by genetic testing and treatment consists of surgery for ptosis and dilation of the upper esophageal sphincter or cricopharyngeal myotomy for dysphagia.
