Abstract
A fresco, recently rediscovered in the sanctuary of Villa di Briano, in the fertile territory of medieval Liburia, represents Saint Tammaro, a holy bishop particularly venerated in Campania, where his relics are preserved to this day. The fresco can be dated back to the third quarter of the eleventh century and connected to the coeval artistic production of the region. This wall painting, besides being a precious testimony of the artistic tradition spread in Campania in the late 10th century and in the 11th century, is an interesting evidence of a distinct local agricultural identity and recalls the typical 'folk Catholicism', practiced in rural areas, in which there were a syncretic mixture of some pre-Christian elements with a dose of Roman Catholicism, and a variety of customs, traditions and magical rituals that fall into the category of popular devotion and have been handed down from generation to generation.
