Dans L’Institution du littéraire, Lucie Robert souligne l’apport de Jeanne Lapointe à l’émergence d’une critique littéraire moderne au Québec. Robert note en effet que Lapointe a non seulement « énoncé les conditions d’exercice d’un enseignement universitaire de la littérature et les critères d’une pratique de recherche alors originale », mais qu’elle a « contribué à former des générations d’étudiants et d’étudiantes qui, à partir de la fin des années 1960, donneront des assises institutionnelles à la recherche littéraire ». Par l’étude de la correspondance qu’a entretenue Jeanne Lapointe avec des écrivaines comme Marie-Claire Blais, Louky Bersianik, Madeleine Gagnon et Gabrielle Roy, cet article se propose de mettre en lumière un autre pan de la contribution de Lapointe à l’infiltration d’idées modernes dans la littérature québécoise, et plus particulièrement dans la littérature des femmes. La correspondance, par la dimension relationnelle qu’elle implique, semble constituer, pour Lapointe, une voie de prolongement à l’enseignement, c’est-à-dire à la transmission du savoir et à l’échange intellectuel. Ainsi, l’analyse des lettres permettra d’appréhender le rôle de mentore – rarement examiné dans une perspective féminine – de Lapointe et de mesurer l’étendue de son influence sur le parcours et les oeuvres de certaines écrivaines.
