Considérée comme un moment incontournable dans l’histoire des études flaubertiennes en raison du débat qui oppose Marcel Proust à Albert Thibaudet, la période de l’entre-deux-guerres est également marquée par une polémique qui, issue des commémorations pour le centenaire de la naissance de Gustave Flaubert, reconduit et prolonge la discussion ouverte par André Gide et ses détracteurs sur les rapports entre littérature et religion. De Charles du Bos à Henri Guillemin, en passant par Albert Thibaudet et François Mauriac, les articles que nous avons retenus dans la présente étude forment un ensemble de textes se répondant les uns les autres et qui, au-delà de l’épineuse question de la finalité de l’ascèse flaubertienne, sont portés par la volonté singulière de refaçonner la mémoire spirituelle de Flaubert et de rendre à la postérité une nouvelle figure d’écrivain chrétien.
