Abstract
Vincent van Gogh est né un an exactement après la naissance d’un frère mort-né que les parents avaient aussi nommé Vincent. Plusieurs de ses biographes, Nagera, Lubin ou Michel, considèrent que ce fait serait à l’origine des problèmes graves qui ont marqué toute sa vie: Vincent aurait été un « enfant de remplacement ». Les auteurs de la plus récente biographie de van Gogh, Naifeh et Smith, ne retrouvent aucune preuve que ce hasard ait eu une telle importance. Leur étude des premières années de Vincent fait plutôt ressortir une profonde inadéquation entre un enfant obstiné, indiscipliné et étrange et les désirs de conformité d’une mère elle-même élevée dans un milieu très conformiste: on y décrit un rejet précoce de cet enfant. La théorie de l’attachment de John Bowlby nous permet de comprendre les problèmes profonds de la vie de Vincent. Dans cet essai, je propose que nous sommes en présence d’une dynamique qui s’est organisée à partir d’une histoire d’attachement profondément perturbée, sans doute précocement, et que finalement Vincent a souffert d’un trouble sévère de l’attachement.
