Abstract
This is an exceptionally well-researched book based on 822 case files of children treated at the Toronto Sanatorium from 1909 to 1950. As a medical and social history of tuberculosis, it is a valuable addition to George Wherett’s The Miracle of the Empty Beds and Katherine McCuaig’s The Weariness, the Fever and the Fret: The Campaign Against Tuberculosis in Canada, 1900-1950. The book is visually rich – there are more than 50 photographs showing children in bed, in school, and in backyard tents.
