Abstract
Esta investigación estudia la progresiva valoración del patrimonio urbano en los proyectos de transformación de la ciudad norte-americana a lo largo del siglo XX. Para ello nos hemos centrado en la creación del centro moderno de Montreal, desde su inicio como metrópolis financiera y nodo de comunicaciones de Canadá hasta su constitución como centro multifuncional contemporáneo. La valoración del recurso al patrimonio urbano para posibilitar una nueva urbanidad, en reacción a la devastadora renovación de barrios centrales en la posguerra, ha catalizado nuevas modalidades urbanísticas, en las que todavía trabajan los urbanistas para reparar e incorporar los sectores centrales antiguos a la modernidad. This research describes the gradual change in the management of urban heritage in the context of transformative urban projects in North American city centres throughout the 20th century. Specifically, the work follows the evolution of Montreal downtown, from its beginning as the financial center of Canada, at the end of the 19th century, to his transformation into a contemporary multifunctional center core. The spectacular and devastating consolidation of Montreal’s downtown after the war led to new approaches in urban planning. The integration of urban heritage into major neighbourhood reconfiguration was foster to enhance both modern and historic parts of the city centre. This work continues as an important focus of urban planning in Montreal today Cette recherche porte sur la prise en charge progressive des éléments du patrimoine urbain dans les projets de transformation urbaine des centres-villes nord-américains, durant le vingtième siècle. La démonstration se concentre sur la création du centre moderne de Montréal, depuis sa constitution comme centre financier du Canada à la fin du dix-neuvième siècle jusqu’à sa consolidation comme centre-ville multifonctionnel contemporain. En réaction à sa consolidation spectaculaire et dévastatrice dans l’après-guerre, émergent des nouvelles idées urbanistiques préoccupées par l’intégration patrimoniale, à travers des interventions majeures de reconfiguration et de mise en valeur des secteurs modernes et anciens de la ville centre, sur lesquelles les urbanistes travaillent toujours.
