Cutaneous adverse drug reactions are common. Many drugs can cause cutaneous eruptions in children but antibiotics, antiepileptics and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are the most frequently implicated. Most cutaneous drug reactions in children are mild and self-limited upon discontinuation of the drug, but can sometimes be severe and life-threatening. The spectrum of clinical manifestations includes urticarial, maculopapular, pustular and bullous eruptions. Management of drug-induced cutaneous eruptions depends mostly on the type of reaction, ranging from symptomatic treatment to highly specialized care in an intensive care or burn unit for patients with toxic epidermal necrolysis. Overall, early identification and immediate discontinuation of the suspected offending drug are the cornerstones of management of drug-induced skin eruptions.
