Abstract
Marvelous Stories from Present and Past , or Jingu qiguan , edited by Baoweng Laoren (The Jar‐Hugging Old Man) in the Ming dynasty (1368–1644), includes 40 short vernacular stories selected from two previous collections. Its commercial success and lasting popularity preserve the best and the most popular vernacular stories from premodern China, and provide source texts for modern readers to study the changing social and cultural environment in the late Ming period. Its various translations also launched the journey of Chinese literature into many non‐Chinese speaking countries, including Japan, Korea, France, and Germany.
