Abstract
This entry presents a comparative introduction to the most prominent standards documents that guide the instruction and assessment of adult English learners in Canada, the European Union, the United States, and Australia. The international perspective contrasts the expected outcomes, in particular the scope of skills and the communicative contexts of proficiency. This entry suggests that each country's policies and priorities for the education of adult English learners have greater impact on their endorsed standards than actual learner data from second language acquisition research. A discussion follows on the criteria for successful roll‐out of new standards and what standards‐based instruction of adult English learners entails from the teacher's perspective.
