Abstract
Spatial patterns emerge and evolve over time due to a myriad of underlying spatially dependent processes. Understanding these geographical processes requires the representation of dynamic complex systems and a spatial analysis that is dynamic. Studying these systems, then, requires conceptualizing and operationalizing approaches to represent relationships and interactions in space, over time, and at multiple scales that can produce emergent and aggregate patterns. This entry reviews these issues in representing dynamic complex systems in geographic research and identifies gaps and potential future directions of investigation.
