Présents dans l’histoire de l’Europe, les crocodiles naturalisés véhiculaient un symbolisme puissant jusqu’au XVIIIe siècle. Par leur valeur historique, la conservation de tels spécimens mérite des soins particuliers et leur restauration demeure une entreprise délicate. L’objectif de cet article est de valoriser la restauration exceptionnelle d’un spécimen historique de crocodile appartenant au Muséum d’Angers, et de discuter sur les éléments d’une possible intervention ancienne pratiquée au XVIIIe siècle sur ce spécimen, tels que l’architecture interne en bois, la présence de mastic pour combler des manques de peau, des pièces de cuir à l’intérieure de la gueule ou de l’utilisation de feuillets de papier pour combler certains endroits.
