 I 1960’erne oprettede UNESCO tre forskningscentre i skolebyggeri i Afrika, Asien og Latinamerika. Artiklen handler om Asian Regional Institute for School Building Research og om den viden, som instituttets medarbejdere bragte med sig fra Vesten, og hvordan den transformeredes i lyset af postkolonialisme og Kold Krig. Inspireret af Karen Barads samtænkning af materialitet og betydning vises i et mikrohistorisk perspektiv, hvordan idealisme og drømmen om en skole i barnets skala blev fortolket på én gang kreativt og pragmatisk. Det skyldtes ikke alene, at verden ændrede sig med et stigende befolkningstal til følge, samtidig med at spændingerne mellem øst og vest tog til. Mødet med lokale byggeskikke og forskellige modernitetsforståelser hos myndighederne i regionen var også medvirkende, ligesom interne organisatoriske forhold og divergerende opfattelser af instituttets arbejdsopgaver blandt de udsendte eksperter.
