Abstract

Cet article explore la matière colorée rencontrée sur les sculptures yoruba (Nigeria/Bénin). Ces couches picturales sont peu connues notamment, au niveau de leur liant mais aussi quant à l’utilisation, en dehors des habituels ocres et kaolin, de colorants végétaux. Ces derniers, habituellement employés en teinture textile ou en vannerie, ont également été utilisés en peinture. Les recherches et les analyses scientifiques menées dans le cadre de ce travail permettent de conforter ce point de vue. Une équipe pluridisciplinaire composée de chimistes et d’une conservatrice-restauratrice conduit cette étude depuis plusieurs années. Il s’agit présentement de faire le point sur les connaissances et informations de ce programme de recherche.
