The Knowledge Framework (KF) is a heuristic that teachers and researchers working with English language learners can use to make explicit how language, content, thinking skills, and key visuals are connected. Developed in Western Canada to examine discourse in context, particularly educational contexts, the KF offers a theory‐informed tool for planning lessons, projects, and units that brings attention to how language is used functionally across subject areas, thereby helping students with academic language development in content‐based instruction. This entry describes the KF, highlights research that has been done on its use, and summarizes its benefits and challenges.
