Abstract
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are very prevalent, affecting at least 40% of children worldwide in high‐ and low‐income countries. ACEs range from household challenges, such as parental divorce or the incarceration of a household member, to child maltreatment (neglect, sexual, physical, and emotional abuse) and community violence. These potentially traumatic events are not only widespread; they may have negative short‐term and long‐lasting effects on health and well‐being. This entry focuses on the prevalence and definitions of ACEs and on their associated neurological, psychological, and health outcomes. It also provides an overview of the protective factors that may foster resilience against ACEs.
