INTRODUCTION : L’obésité morbide a triplé au Canada entre 1978 et 2004. Il est suggéré que la chirurgie bariatrique soit le traitement le plus efficace. Or, on estime qu’une proportion importante de cette population a des troubles de comportement alimentaire qui ne sont pas bien compris. OBJECTIF : Ce travail de recherche tente d’élucider les caractéristiques du profil alimentaire des individus obèses morbides. MÉTHODE : L’étude observationnelle rétrospective prenait place dans un centre hospitalier. La collecte de données était basée sur les notes de consultation nutritionnelle bariatrique pour 83 patients (55 femmes et 28 hommes) âgés de 16 à 62 ans. L’IMC variait de 39.5 à 82.3 kg/m2. RÉSULTATS: Les patterns alimentaires étudiés se caractérisaient par l’absence fréquente du déjeuner et souvent compensée par une prise alimentaire de pauvre qualité après le souper. L’apport énergétique et les quantités de nourriture mesurées en volume étaient globalement plus importants en fin de journée. Une majorité de patients rapportait manger rapidement (< 15 minutes) à tous les repas et avoir de la difficulté à identifier ou répondre aux signaux de faim et de rassasiement. Plusieurs éléments identifiés recoupent le phénomène d’hyperphagie homéostatique. Finalement, une majorité de patients n’avaient pas reçu d’intervention nutritionnelle soutenue par un nutritionniste-diététiste antérieurement à la chirurgie pour l’amélioration du pattern alimentaire néfaste. CONCLUSION : Plusieurs caractéristiques alimentaires nuisibles ont été identifiées dans la population obèse morbide étudiée. La compréhension améliorée du profil alimentaire dysfonctionnel aidera à mieux prévenir et traiter ces désordres alimentaires associés à l’obésité morbide.
