Abstract
Negative attitudes toward parents and parenting with disabilities are widespread. In the public mind, parental disability has long been associated with child misfortune. Research in this area, however, reveals tremendous variability in the experiences of children brought up by parents with disabilities, with many faring well by comparison with age peers with the same socioeconomic backgrounds. Moreover, the research, although limited in a number of important respects, suggests that the problems or hardships faced by many children brought up by parents with disabilities owe more to exclusionary and disabling social processes than to parental disability per se. This entry reviews the current state of knowledge about parents with disabilities and the developmental health of their children. The review, which is more illustrative than exhaustive, is organized around four topics. These are the epidemiology of parents with disabilities, cultural antipathy to parents and parenting with disabilities, the entanglement of parental disability with adverse life conditions, and the lived experience of growing up with a parent with disabilities.
