Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are generally considered as cleaner alternatives to conventional passenger cars. Nevertheless, the operation of PHEVs in cold conditions has been hindered by issues of range anxiety, cost, and charging time. Indeed, the powertrain performance is reduced in low temperature and heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) energy demand are increased. This paper reviews the impacts of cold temperatures on PHEVs components performance, road condition, and charging infrastructure, briefly. Furthermore, several thermal management systems (TMSs) are assessed which can improve the PHEVs performance at cold temperature. Finally, development trend and future challenges of TMSs are discussed along with the consideration of the approach in cold-temperature operation.
