Effect of High Initial Effective Confining Stress on the Mechanical Response of Natural Silt

Abstract
The effect of relatively high initial effective confining stress (σ'vc) level on the mechanical response of a natural silt retrieved from Lower Mainland of British Columbia, Canada, was investigated using a series of monotonic and cyclic constant-volume direct simple shear (DSS) testing. Under monotonic shear loading, the silt specimens normally consolidated to varying σ'vc levels displayed a prominent contractive tendency, and when normalized, the effective stress paths appeared to generally coincide indicating stress history normalizability. Under cyclic shear loading, the tested silt specimens exhibited a 'cyclic mobility type' strain accumulation regardless of the magnitude of σ'vc and the applied cyclic stress ratios. The observed cyclic shear resistance of the tested silt specimens appeared to be insensitive to the applied vertical effective confining stress levels. The monotonic and cyclic behavioral patterns observed for the tested silt material under DSS testing was found similar to those typically observed for normally consolidated clays.
