Les pays occidentaux font face au défi d’actualiser les principes de leurs interventions et leurs modes d’action publique dans le domaine de la culture, influencés en cela par de nombreux enjeux.

\nIssu du Colloque international sur les tendances et les défis des politiques culturelles dans les pays occidentaux (Québec, 2008), cet ouvrage présente un ensemble de réflexions sur le rôle et les capacités d’action des États nationaux, mais aussi sur ceux des territoires, tant locaux, régionaux que transnationaux, face à des problématiques qui dépassent de nos jours leur cadre traditionnel d’intervention. Qu’il suffise d’évoquer au passage des sujets tels que la diversité culturelle, la propriété intellectuelle, l’interculturalisme, l’action des régions et des villes, l’imbrication croissante de problématiques sociales, économiques, environnementales et culturelles, la remise en question du « primat » artistique et de la démocratisation culturelle, l’émergence de nouveaux modes de gouvernance de la culture et l’entrecroisement des niveaux gouvernementaux d’intervention et des systèmes d’acteurs. Voilà des sujets parmi nombre d’autres abordés par les auteurs.
