En pleno siglo XXI el Atlántico Sur es una zona de gran relevancia en el contexto geopolítico donde se enmarca. Los intereses sobre el mismo rebasan los límites geográficos que imponen sus los países ribereños entre la Línea del Ecuador y el continente antártico. Sobre esta parte del globo confluyen múltiples intereses, tanto de los Estados partes de la “Zona de Paz y Cooperación del Atlántico Sur”como de potencias extranjeras. Entre estas última es imprescindible mencionar a el Reino Unido de la Gran Bretaña e Irlanda del Norte, quien mantiene ocupado una serie de territorios estratégico en esta área geográfica, en especial, el territorio usurpado de las Islas Malvinas, Georgia y Sándwich del Sur. Es necesario señalar que estos territorios son los más preciados del Atlántico Sur en cuanto concentran gran cantidad de recursos naturales altamente demandados y su posición es vital para cualquier tipo de control sobre la región y otras regiones vecinas. Las aspiraciones del Reino Unido, que hasta hoy se mantiene como potencia administradora de los territorios no autónomos antes mencionados, han ido increscendo desde el fin de la Guerra de las Malvinas. Gran Bretaña mantiene hoy, a las Malvinas como sus posesiones más importantes en América Latina en consonancia con su política imperialista.
