Le présent article revient sur trois moments clefs de l’histoire des zoos du Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle dans leur relation à l’éducation à l’environnement. Tout d’abord, une investigation historique montre que le premier établissement zoologique du Muséum (la Ménagerie du Jardin des Plantes de Paris), fut pensé dès sa création en contexte postrévolutionnaire comme ayant une fonction éducative vis-à-vis des citoyens. Cependant, celle-ci ne peut être assimilée à une éducation à l’environnement, à un moment où des architectures « carcérales » s’attachaient plutôt à une spatialisation de la classification des espèces. En se focalisant ensuite sur le site du bois de Vincennes à Paris, il s’agit de mettre l’accent sur plusieurs éléments de contexte, dès le début du 20ème siècle, qui ont amené progressivement les zoos du Muséum à une éducation à l’environnement – depuis les présentations novatrices qui contextualisaient les animaux dans des paysages jusqu’à la mise en espace et en récit de notions connexes à celle d’environnement (« écosystèmes », « biotopes », « biodiversité »). Enfin, l’article montre que, dans leur volonté actuelle de sensibiliser à la « biodiversité en danger », les zoos tentent une autojustification de leur existence, mais restent confronté à leurs paradoxes.
