Pubertal development progresses via distinct stages marked by the initiation of morphological, physiological, and behavioral changes. The onset and course of puberty are sensitive to an array of factors: genetic (e.g., gender, body fat ratios), environmental (e.g., geography, stress), and behavioral (e.g., eating, stress reactivity). Epidemiological data underline important variations in puberty onset both between and within populations, leading experts in the field to consider two aspects of this sphere of development—that is, pubertal status and onset. The former refers to current pubertal attainment in its own right and the latter to an individual's pubertal standing relative to existing normative data. By way of an example, several researchers have documented the negative consequences of its premature onset (e.g., increased risks for health problems, growth issues, and psychosocial adjustment issues). As such, considerable work has been completed regarding the identification, description, and better understanding of the mechanisms involved in puberty onset.
